Crazy Dangerous by Andrew Klavan

About the book:

Crazy Dangerous
| Andrew Klavan

You probably want to hear about Jennifer and the demons and how I played chicken with a freight train and-oh yeah-the weird murder . . . you're definitely going to want to hear about that."

Sam Hopkins is a good kid who has fallen in with a bad crowd. Hanging around with car thieves and thugs, Sam knows it's only a matter of time before he makes one bad decision too many and gets into real trouble.

But one day, Sam sees them harassing an eccentric schoolmate of his named Jennifer. When Sam finds the courage to face the bullies down, he loses a bad set of friends and acquires a very strange new one.

Because Jennifer is not just eccentric. To Sam, she seems downright crazy. She has terrifying hallucinations involving demons and the devil and death. And here's the really crazy part: Sam is beginning to suspect that these visions may actually be prophecies--prophecies of something terrible that's going to happen very soon. Unless he can stop it.

With no one to believe him, with no one to help him, Sam is now all alone in a race against time. Finding the truth before disaster strikes is going to be both crazy and very, very dangerous.

What I think:

Crazy Dangerous is an interesting novel aimed towards young adults.  Although, I would not put in on my list of favorites it is not a bad read.  For me it started out a bit slow .  The story is told in first person from Sam's point of view.

Like all teenagers Sam is struggling with fitting in. He just wants to be the cool kid and is currently labeled a Preacher's Kid.  When you have that label everyone kind of acts differently towards you.  Sam just wants to be accepted and liked for the kid he is. He finds himself tangled up with the wrong crowd.  Learning to steal cars and all kinds of other stuff he finds himself not liking the situation he is in.  He needs to get out!

Do right fear nothing these are the words Sam hears repeated to himself throughout the book. Words he uses to guide him from wrong back to the path of a hero.  Sam befriends Jennifer a very troubled young lady who sees hallucinations.  When Jennifer's hallucinations become true, Sam finds himself as a murder suspect. Uh Oh!  Everyone just thinks Jennifer is crazy but Sam sees the truth in her words and stumbles on a huge conspiracy that could destroy his little town.  Will Sam Save them?  Well you'll just have to read it to find out that twist.

The ending of this book is definitely more of a thriller than the beginning.  There are definitely some good life lessons in this book particularly for the young adult who may be facing these struggles themselves.  I like that Sam goes to his Dad when he is in trouble.  I also like that even though told not to do something, he still did what he believed in and went to help the struggling Jennifer.  It would have been so much easier to look the other way.  That's an important lesson for all of us to learn I think, that you can't always just look the other way.
