For the past year Walgreens has been negotiating with Express Scripts for a new contract to continue as part of its pharmacy provider. Negotiations were not successful. As of January 01, 2012 Walgreens is not part of the Express Scripts Pharmacy Network. This includes all Walgreens nationwide and the Duane Reade Pharmacies in New York.
What does this mean for you the customer? Patients covered by an Express Scripts plan find themselves looking for a new pharmacy. Some may find themselves having to drive further, or having a pharmacy not opened 24 hours or with a drive thru. Walgreens offers more 24 hour and drive-thru pharmacies than any other pharmacy in the country. Patients are NOT seeing their cost go down which leads to frustration.
What is Walgreens doing to ease the burden of the Walgreens and Express Script break up? Walgreens has implemented a "patient transition plan" for Express Script patients. Only patents with certain prescription insurance plans by Express Script are impacted. Patients are encouraged to check with their pharmacy to see. They can also check the back of their prescription insurance card for an Express Script name. If there is no name they are not affected by this change.
Another step Walgreens is taking to minimize disruption is to offer a discount for annual membership into the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club. In January, an individual can join for only $5, or $10 for the family membership. A family membership covers everyone in your immediate family including a spouse, dependents under 22 and pets. This will enable members to receive a savings on over 8,000 brand name and generic medications. More than 400 generic medications are available with a three month supply for less than $1. a week. Members will also receive discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, nebulizer and diabetic supplies. As well a bonuses when you purchase Walgreens brand products and photofinishing services. The regular annual membership is $20 for the individual and $35 for the family.
